| Being Exceptional : Code
of Ethics and Standards This Code of Coaching Ethics and
Standards sets out the personal and professional standards to which
I work as a Coach and indicates the professional and ethical nature
of the coaching profession. It outlines what you, the Client, can
expect from the coaching relationship and its boundaries and
standards.
Personal and
Professional Conduct
- I will accurately represent my qualifications, expertise and
experience as a coach. I will not intentionally mislead or make
false claims about the benefits and results that my clients may
receive from coaching. I will ensure that all promotional materials
and resources are honest, created with integrity and comply with the
requirements of the UK Advertising Standards Authority. I will not
knowingly offer professional information or advice which may be
confidential, misleading or inaccurate.
- I will conduct myself in a manner that reflects positively on
the coaching profession at all times and respect the different
approaches within coaching.
- I will continue my professional development with the dedication
and passion required to be an exceptional coach, seeking always to
augment my experience, competence and skills. I will maintain
connection and participation within my own coaching circle to
promote and engage in a supportive environment in which to develop,
share and learn. I will seek feedback from my clients and coaching
colleagues and constantly evaluate the standard and value of my
practice.
- I will constantly monitor and maintain my fitness and ability to
offer the highest standards of coaching practice to my clients and
to the coaching profession as a whole. I will seek advice and
support should I recognise any health or personal issues that may
impair or conflict with my role as a coach and consider my fitness
to remain in practice whilst working in the best interests of my
clients.
- I will ensure that written consent is received from the parent
or legal guardian before entering into a coaching relationship with
a child and young person under the age of 18. This applies also to
the coaching of groups of children or young people under the age of
18. I understand my moral obligation to alert the relevant
authorities to allegations of abuse towards a client or young person
under the age of 18.
- I will respect all laws and by-laws of the UK (and where
applicable those of the country of a client based abroad) including
laws around copyrights, intellectual property and trademarks and
equality legislation.
- I will ensure that I am covered by Professional Indemnity
Insurance at all times to cover the provision of coaching services.
Client and Coach Relationship
- I believe that my clients are capable and resourceful
individuals and will treat them with integrity, honesty and
confidentiality, fully respecting their values, beliefs and goals.
- I will ensure that, prior to their first coaching session, my
clients are fully aware of the nature of coaching, have read and
understood the Coaching Code of Ethics and Standards and have
understood and signed the Coaching Agreement (which outlines the
duration of the programme of coaching, fees, location and frequency
and duration of sessions). I will ensure that the Coaching Agreement
is clear and fair and honoured by myself at all times.
- I will maintain professional coach/client relationships at all
times with my clients and will not knowingly exploit my clients
personally, physically, emotionally or financially.
- Where a potential conflict of interest may arise, I will openly
discuss this with the client and deal with it in a manner which
serves the best interests of the client.
- Where I believe that a client’s best interests would be better
served by another coach, professional or resource I will encourage
the client to seek that support. I am aware of the boundaries of a
coaching relationship and my own professional competence and will
always operate in the client’s best interests with regard to the
professional support that is most appropriate for them.
- I will be aware if a client is no longer benefiting from the
coaching relationship and will seek to work with the client, in
their best interests, to determine the most appropriate way forward.
I will respect a client’s right to terminate the coaching
relationship at any point during a programme of coaching.
Confidentiality
- I will respect the absolute rights of my clients’
confidentiality, except as otherwise permitted by the client in
writing or as required by law. I will obtain permission from my
clients before releasing their names as clients or references.
- I will accurately create, maintain, store and dispose of any
client records in line with the Data Protection Act 1998.
